Project Overview

On April 16, 2013, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that 15,000 air traffic controllers would be furloughed, potentially leading to 6,700 daily flight delays. Legislation by Congress was the only hope for avoiding this air travel crisis. By uniting consumers in just 10 days with the launch of “Don’t Ground America,” a public affairs campaign which exposed facts about the furloughs, we mobilized travelers at airport gates and reached them through Twitter, Facebook and an advocacy site. Our efforts generated more than 124,700 letters to key regulators and members of Congress and the White House, as well as generated more than 3,000 media stories from publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, USA Today and Chicago Tribune. On April 26, Congress passed companion bills ending the furloughs and President Obama signed the legislation into law on May 1. Among more than 5,000 pieces of legislation introduced at the time, this legislation was one of just 22 bills passed during the 113 Congress.
